Occasions
What to make, and what to write, for the days that matter. Not only the romantic ones.
14 February, and the week of small days leading up to it
Valentine's Day
The problem with Valentine's Day is not affection, it is logistics. The flowers are marked up, the restaurants are booked, and whatever you order online arrives on the fifteenth. A page has none of those failure modes: you make it the night before, or the morning of, and it arrives the instant you send it.
All year, which is rather the point
Birthday
Birthdays are the honest test of a gift, because the person usually does not need anything. What they notice is evidence that you were paying attention — the running joke, the terrible photo nobody deleted, the thing they did for you in March and have long since forgotten.
Your date, once a year
Anniversary
An anniversary is a measurement, and measurements deserve to be shown. The anniversary template opens with a live counter — years, months and days since the date you give it — and then walks through the timeline underneath. Seeing the number is a surprisingly different feeling from knowing it.
Shravan Purnima — August, most years
Raksha Bandhan
Rakhi is the festival most likely to be celebrated over a video call. The thread goes in the post a week early, the call happens at an awkward hour, and the actual day passes in fifteen minutes. A page is the part that stays after the call ends.
Kartik Amavasya — October or November
Diwali
By the evening of Diwali the average phone has received forty near-identical images, most of them compressed past legibility and none of them written by the person who sent them. The bar, in other words, is on the floor.
The second Sunday in May
Mother's Day
Most people find this the hardest page to write, and the reason is consistent: with a mother there is too much to say rather than too little, so it collapses into "thank you for everything" and the specificity drains out.
The third Sunday in June
Father's Day
He will say he does not want anything and he will mean it, which is what makes the wallet-and-mug industry so persistent. What tends to actually land with fathers is not a gift at all but an acknowledgement, delivered without ceremony.
Any day you are not in the same place
Long distance
Distance is mostly an accumulation of small absences — you were not at the dinner, you did not see the flat, you heard about the day instead of having it. Presents do not fix this and neither does a page, but a page is at least the right shape: it arrives instantly and it is specific to the two of you.
When you are ready
Proposal
A page is not the proposal. Nobody should be asked an important question by hyperlink, and we would rather say so plainly than sell you the idea. What a page is good for is the fifteen minutes before, or the hour after — the case you want to make, and the record of the day that survives it.
Wedding season, which in India is most of it
Wedding
Weddings are already saturated with objects. The house fills with things that must be kept because of who gave them, and the actual sentiment gets lost in the logistics of storing it. A page carries the sentiment and takes up no shelf.
As soon as possible, generally
An apology
This is the one template where restraint is the entire design. There is no confetti, no celebratory motion, no decorative flourish anywhere on it — the palette is deliberately muted and the page is short. An apology that arrives with animation reads as a performance, and a performance is the opposite of what is being asked for.
5 September in India
Teachers' Day
The strange arithmetic of teaching is that the teacher who changed your direction has no idea they did it. You were one of forty that year and one of several thousand across a career, and the moment that mattered to you was, to them, an ordinary Tuesday.
The first few weeks, when nobody is sleeping
A new baby
New parents receive a great deal of equipment and very little addressed to them. The clothes are for the baby, the toys are for the baby, and the two people doing the actual work get congratulated in passing on their way to the next feed.
Convocation season
Graduation
A graduation is the rare occasion with a genuine archive behind it. Four years of photographs already exist, scattered across phones, and nobody has ever put them in order. Doing that is most of the gift.
A birthday, an anniversary, or no particular day
In memory
These are usually made on a date the rest of the world has forgotten — the birthday, the anniversary of the day, or an ordinary afternoon when it became necessary. Some are shared with family. A great many are never sent to anybody at all, and are simply somewhere to put it.
